LOS MUÉRTIMER immediately brings you back to your own childhood. […] The opportunity to make a family film with so many layers, centered on teenage characters with real conflict and depth, is not something that comes along very often. Combining horror and adventure with a generous dose of comedy has been a breath of fresh air for me

— said the director.

Following the success of Perfectos desconocidos and El cuarto pasajero, Telecinco Cinema and Pokeepsie Films, part of Banijay Iberia, are once again joining forces on a film that will be released theatrically by Paramount Pictures Spain.

LOS MUÉRTIMER, the new film produced by Telecinco Cinema and Pokeepsie Films, part of Banijay Iberia, with Ghislain Barrois, Álvaro Augustin, Carolina Bang and Álex de la Iglesia serving as producers, has unveiled its first poster and a new selection of images ahead of its theatrical release on August 14 through Paramount Pictures Spain. The film is directed by Álvaro Fernández Armero, whose credits include Ocho apellidos marroquíes, Si yo fuera rico and Sentimos las molestias.

The cast includes Víctor Clavijo, Alexandra Jiménez, Fele Martínez, Belén Rueda and Pepe Lorente, alongside young actors Diego Montejo, Iratxe Emparan, Melani, Adrián Checa and Bruna González, among others. Written by Jelen Morales, the film is a mystery adventure combining horror and dark humor, based on the successful LOS MUÉRTIMER graphic novel trilogy by young French illustrator Léa Mazé. The series was nominated for the prestigious Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards in the United States and was selected for the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Among other accolades, it received the 2018 Award for Best Children’s Comic from the French Association of Comic Book Journalists and Critics.

Director Álvaro Fernández Armero said: “LOS MUÉRTIMER is one of those projects that immediately brings you back to your own childhood, from Stand by Me and The Goonies to My Girl and The Three Investigators book series. I connected with the screenplay instantly and felt a complete sense of empathy with the story.
“The opportunity to make a family film with so many layers, centered on teenage characters with real conflict and depth, is not something that comes along very often. Combining horror and adventure with a generous dose of comedy has been a breath of fresh air for me.”

He added: “The group of young protagonists, led by Diego Montejo and Iratxe Emparan, demonstrated a level of professionalism and talent that amazed us all.”

LOS MUÉRTIMER was filmed over seven weeks at several locations across Biscay.

The film tells the story of five young people who uncover a jewelry theft operation at a cemetery, only to find that none of the adults believe them. Their investigation brings them together as they set out to uncover the truth.

LOS MUÉRTIMER is produced by Telecinco Cinema, Pokeepsie Films and Pokeepsietxea, with the participation of Mediaset España, Movistar Plus+, the Provincial Council of Biscay and Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group. Paramount Pictures Spain will distribute the film in theaters.

SYNOPSIS

Nico (Diego Montejo) is an intelligent and introverted fifteen-year-old who is bullied at school because his parents own the town’s only funeral home. Hoping to make a friend, he signs up for a cultural exchange program.
There is only one problem: the exchange student turns out to be a girl. Gabrielle (Iratxe Emparan) is a defiant young French woman who is used to almost anything except living surrounded by the dead.

When Pol (Pepe Lorente), a gravestone carver, tells them one of the many mysterious stories hidden within the local cemetery, they decide to investigate. Their discovery of a body and a collection of stolen jewelry goes far beyond anything they expected. When they return to the scene with Nico’s parents, played by Alexandra Jiménez and Víctor Clavijo, everything has disappeared and, naturally, no one believes them. From that moment on, Gabi and Nico begin receiving threats and are pursued just as they are being harassed by their usual bullies, Marc, Sofía and Raquel, played by Adrián Checa, Bruna González and Melani. The situation forces all five of them to flee together.

Now that Marc, Sofía and Raquel also know what it feels like to be threatened, they have no choice but to join the investigation. Gabi, Nico, Marc, Sofía and Raquel form an unlikely group determined to uncover the truth, even if doing so means entering the dark adult world waiting for them.
